These institutions succeed precisely because they've identified fragments of what church traditionally bundled together.

Fragments and the Durability Test

Here's where secular substitutes hit a ceiling. Political activism provides community, ethics, and mission, but without transcendent grounding tends toward burnout or fanaticism. Therapy offers profound growth opportunities, but it's individualistic and can't provide transcendence, community, or mission to integrate your healing into a larger story.

Festival culture gives you transcendence and community, but no ethical framework or sustained mission. Professional networks provide growth and purpose, but only within career advancement, lacking deeper meaning.

Political movements rise and fall. Fitness communities cycle with trends. Professional networks dissolve when careers end. But I know people in their eighties who've been attending the same church for sixty years and are still discovering new dimensions across all seven goods. The institution proved deep enough to reward a lifetime of engagement.
